I am by no means a celebrity reporter, but I did have the opportunity to speak with Ms. Angell Conwell about her style and fashion sense. Angell is so easy to talk to and was so open for a discussion about her style. As much as I wish I could, I couldn’t get it all down—plus, I was really enjoying the conversation! I didn’t have a recorder, so I will paraphrase and inject direct quotes as best as I wrote them down. So, basically, her responses are as close as possible to what she actually said!
Me: Did you read the post? What did you think?
Angell: Yes, and I loved it! You hit the nail on the head. I really appreciate you putting me on instead of your usual MAN DAY. I know that your readers were expecting their MAN DAY! I liked your recommendations too.
Me: I’m glad you liked it! (note: I had the cheesiest smile on my face when I said that!) How would you describe your style?
Angell: I’m definitely growing and changing. You look back at pictures and think you’re hot and you’re not. When I was was younger, I was comfortable with my cleavage exposed. Now, I’m not so comfortable showing all of my cleavage.
I want the girl next door look meets sexy meets edgy. My style is not set in stone and I am still looking. I like color, but I have been wearing a lot of black clothes lately. But, I’m not depressed! Maybe it’s saying something, but I’m not sure what it is saying.
Me: You could use color as your signature look. Donna Karan of DKNY typically wears black but occasionally throws some color in the mix. Who are your style icons or style influences?
Angell: I really like Jennifer Lopez’s style—risky, but glamorous at the same time. I really liked the green Versace dress that she wore at the Grammys a few years ago. It was a risk, but it worked for her at the time. I also like Jessica Simpson’s and Janet Jackson’s style. I like Kerry Washington’s style too–classy, beautiful, girl next door. It takes some time to figure out what direction I want to go in when I get dressed, but at the same time, it’s supposed to be fun. I shouldn’t feel pressured when I get dressed. Less pressure is better and less is more (in terms of fashion).
When Baby Boy premiered, I wanted to show breasts and stomach and legs. I was young and that’s what I liked then. I was only 17 years old. Now, I try to play the rules of the fashion game. If I show cleavage, I don’t show my legs and vice versa, if I show my legs, I cover my cleavage.
Me: What are your beauty addictions?
Angell: I don’t really have beauty addictions, but I have some fashion addictions. I love T-shirts! I have a T-shirt fetish. I love jeans and a T-shirt. But, the only problem is that when I have to dress up for a red carpet event, it seems like all I have are jeans and T-shirts in my closet!
Oh, I have a really horrible hat finish. I have hats everywhere. I have all types of hats for all occasions. I’ve even worn a hat with a dress—that’s really weird, but you can rock it. I find a way to make it work!
I have gone through a bag fetish. I understand the bag fetish. After my fetish, I went through shell shock after I realized how much they cost. But, I definitely like them.
Me: What type of bags do you like?
Angell: I like Gucci bags. It’s not very original, but it’s a very classic look.
Me: Yes, they last through time and you can pass Gucci bags down to your grandchildren.
Angell: Yes, that’s true. They do last through fads.
We then go through a hilarious conversation of quality bags and cheap knockoffs. Angell’s verdict: Cheap bags are not good.
I have really been liking sundresses lately. I also looks better when I wear clinched (at the waist) dresses or wraparound dresses.
Me: Yes, those dresses that accentuate your waist while softly enhancing your curves really look good on you.
Angell: It’s difficult to dress for my shape. I have to have clothes fitted and tailored to my waist. That can be expensive, though. And I don’t want to break my budget. You see all of these celebrities with designer dresses and clothes, but I really don’t want to spend all my money on clothes. You don’t want to have to break your savings accounts to go on the red carpet. With my shape, and being a high maintenance shopper, I can’t spend all my money on clothes. If I like it and it fits, I’ll wear it. I like to mix it up, maybe Gucci shoes and H&M outfit.
If it looks good, I’m buying it. It just doesn’t feel right to spend so much money. It hurts my heart. What’s the point of buying it if it costs too much? I like nice clothes, but I’m not going to break the bank. I like places like Bebe and Forever 21. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to look good. But, if I go into Bebe, I won’t wear it for a few months. I don’t want to end up wearing the same outfit as someone else at an event. I had that happen to me and I won’t happen let it happen again!
Me: What advice would you give to someone who wants to be fashionable on a budget?
Angell: Don’t outdo yourself. Keep it simple. Dress it up by using accessories. That’s why I like Janet Jackson—she keeps its simple. Focus more on the the accessories than the outfit. Even a simple black outfit can have great accessories. A lotta people say beauty is pain, but I don’t think that’s true. There should be no pain. If you’re not comfortable, it shows. Your confidence level has to be up to look good. Beauty should not be painful.
Both: Many thank yous and end of call.
There was so much more discussed, but that’s all I’m reporting….lots of giggles and guffaws omitted!
Thanks to Neeta Wooten and Tamiko Thomas of Ideal PR and to Angell for making the time to speak with me.
Have a great weekend and keep it strictly stylish!

I absolutely love this girl. She has style, personality and she’s intelligent. Every interview I’ve read with her makes me like her more. Can’t wait to see more of her.
