Strictly Fab Finds of the Week for May 5, 2008

Hello fabulites! Here are my finds for the week:

SEE: ” Nim’s Island” starring Abigail Breslan, Jodie Foster, and Gerard Butler

Now I didn’t actually see this movie, the hubby ad the kids partook in it. According to my eight-year-old expert movie reviewer, Nasir, it was a great movie and he would watch it again and again. Dear hubby Pat expounded a bit more: this movie is basically about the struggle of a girl and a woman’s search for courage. Rotten Tomatoes offered a much more detailed description:

Based on the popular children’s novel of the same name by Wendy Orr, NIM’S ISLAND follows the adventures of Nim Rusoe (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE’s Abigail Breslin), a spirited young girl who lives on a remote island with her scientist dad, Jack (300′s Gerard Butler), and a host of animal companions, including an iguana, a sea lion, and a sea turtle. Nim’s idyllic life gets shaken up, however, when her father goes missing while on an ocean outing. Seeking help to find Jack, Nim contacts her favorite literary hero, explorer Alex Rover (also played by Butler), who, in reality, is uptight–and distinctly unadventurous–author Alexa Rover (Jodie Foster). Against her better judgment, Alexa journeys to Nim’s faraway home, setting a series of thrilling and funny moments in motion. Directed and written (in part) by the husband/wife team of Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, NIM’S ISLAND revels in its fanciful premise, never getting hung up on its unrealistic plot points. (E-mail on an extremely secluded island?) While Breslin and Butler are charming, the real revelation is witnessing the oft-serious Foster ham it up in a role requires plenty of slapstick, fish-out-of-water moments. Although teens might roll their eyes at NIM’Sunapologetically sugary scenes, younger children will enjoy the giddy mood present of the ISLAND.

WATCH: Ugly Betty starring America Ferrara and Vanessa Williams, ABC, Thursdays 8pm EST

You are NOT a true fashionista if you are not a fan of this wonderful show. I mean, what fashionista could resist high fashion, high drama, and high comedy all mixed in one? Besides getting wrapped up in the delicious wardrobes, I easily get caught up in the high jinx that ensnares Betty episode after episode. If you haven’t watched the show, let me give you quick recap: Betty is the assistant of the playboy son of a cheating media mogul who had a decades long affair with an Anna Wintour-like fashion editor who died in a car crash which was orchestrated by the mogul’s wife who is a horrible drunk with a transsexual son who now runs the magazine….and that’s just ONE backstory. LISTEN: “Delicate Dragon” by Adama

This sultry soul singers debut is a mix of ballads and upbeat tunes that veers off of the beaten path. Adama is a Nigerian-British songstress who hails from London who also is an international kung fu martial arts champion. Not bad for a girl who grew up in the housing councils, i.e. projects, of London. For a snippet of her sounds, check our her official website.

READ: Your daily newspaper….or a news website.…keep up with what’s going on in the world around you. If I attempt one more ‘gin to hold a conversation with a normal human who has absolutely no clue about anything other than celebrity gossip and the playoffs, I will literally die from boredom…..

Have a strictly fab day!
